The department comprises the departments of Mathematics, English, Economics, Physics and Chemistry.

Mathematics is taught in the first two years of the engineering course, giving emphasis on pure engineering-related subjects.

Students are taught English under the programme of ESP (English for Special Purpose).

Training and placement department

This department is the apex body of the institute. Many companies are coming to participate in the campus recruitment programmee. Few of them are mass recruiters. LnT, TCS, Vedanta, Capgemini, Cognizent etc. are few of the companies recruiting engineers from this institute. Today the alumni of Orissa Engineering College exist in most of the multinationals globally.

Admissions

Admissions conform to the regulations laid down by Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), the technical university of the state of Orissa. The seats are filled up through counseling of Joint Entrance Examination (O-JEE), All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).

The candidate must have completed 12 years of schooling, equivalent of the Intermediate School Certificate of India (i.e., +2 level of Indian states) with physics, chemistry, and mathematics as major subjects in the last two years of schooling.

Lateral entry

Students who have cleared diploma with minimum 60% mark in the corresponding subject are eligible for this scheme. They are enrolled directly into the third semester of the engineering courses.

It is mandatory for all candidates to appear in the Joint Entrance Examination conducted by Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), Rourkela or All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Ministry of HRD, New Delhi or Joint Entrance Examination conducted by Orissa Private Engineering College Association (OPECA) to get a seat either through counselling.

Facilities

Dr. Sudhanshu Mohan Central Library has subscriptions to national and international journals. It subscribes to DELNET through which the students and faculty get access to more than 200 libraries across India and abroad.

The Rajlaxmi Memorial Health Centre provides health care facilities to the students and staff of the institute and renders services to the local villagers.

There is a centre for R&D called the Hiranya Kumar Research and Development Centre.

Student Interaction Programs

There are two main student interaction program conducted in OEC. One is the tech-fest called ZAZEN, and other is cultural fest called ZEPHYR.

Zephyr– means cool breeze, and lasts three days. This is a three day Event that includes face painting, friends forever, rodies, code breakers, paper dress, mehndi competition, rangoli, quiz, painting, dance, and singing.Rodies is a task event conducted by the final year students every year. This includes giving medium and difficult level tasks to the participants to be completed in a given duration of time. This is completely a team work event. The teams completing the tasks fetch into the next levels and consequently at last the neck to neck competition exist between one or two participants. The participant getting maximum supporting votes win. Renown musical bands like Euphoria and eminent Bollywood singers like Mika Singh, Benny Dayal, Suraj Jagan, Nikhil D’Souza, Kunal Ganjawala and many more have been organising their concerts in the campus during the ‘Star nite’ of zephyr. Dinner is organised on one of the three days.Another event attracting the youth is the Fashion show conducted in the Zephyr. The fashion show includes traditional, western and sports attires. An event for the freshers is especially kept to make them win titles like Ms.Zephyr and Mr.Zephyr.

Zazen is the technical festival of OEC Bhubaneswar. This is also a three day technical innovative meet attracting a large no. of students every year.It includes Robotics,Man vs Machine,Circuitmania,Chip designing and coding events. The winners get cash prizes, medals and certificates. The final and pre final year mechanical and electrical engineering students finally present their innovative projects like battery, solar and electric cars on the first day of Zazen in the form of an exhibition in the Workshop area. This encourages the other students to think beyond technology and create something innovative. Apart from these two festivals, there are many other functions organised by various clubs. Samavesh, Western Orissa meet and Cricifenzy are few of them. The first two events are organised every year to make an interaction among the freshers and the seniors and the third is a Cricket event. An inter-college match is played between many colleges of the city like IIT BBSR, KIIT University, ITER etc.The match takes place in the Sports Complex of Orissa Engineering College. The winning team is rewarded cash prize and K.K. Patnaik trophy.
