Understanding the Philipp Schwartz Initiative

The Philipp Schwartz Initiative is a vital program aimed at supporting researchers who are at risk. Funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, this initiative allows scholars to continue their academic work in a safe environment. For 2025, the program continues to be open for applications at Universität Hamburg, providing a unique opportunity for qualified researchers globally.

Aim and Benefits for Funded Researchers

The primary aim of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative is to facilitate the integration of at-risk scholars into the academic community. Researchers who are awarded this fellowship can expect to receive a scholarship of roughly EUR 2,670 per month. Additionally, those employed via the funding line at Universität Hamburg will be remunerated according to the collective wage agreement pertinent to the German public sector. The institution also benefits, receiving a EUR 20,000 lump sum per funded application to enhance the research environment for the incoming scholars.

Requirements for Qualification

To qualify for the Philipp Schwartz Initiative, applicants must hold a doctorate or a comparable academic title (such as PhD or CSC). Furthermore, candidates should possess sufficient proficiency in English or German to enable effective research communication. An important stipulation is that applicants should not have left their country of origin more than five years before submitting their application. Additionally, proof of the applicant’s at-risk status must be acquired from either the Scholars at Risk (SAR) network or the Council for At-Risk Academics (CARA), ensuring their eligibility for this supportive initiative.

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply by December 31, 2025. For more detailed information, please visit the official website: P.Schwartz Initiative Details.
