This blog post provides information about the central sector scheme called the “National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme” of the Department of School Education.
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMSS) is a centrally sponsored scholarship scheme that aims to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections of society. The scheme is implemented by the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education.
The objective of the NMMSS is to encourage students to continue their education at the secondary stage and prevent dropouts. It provides financial assistance to deserving students to meet their educational expenses.
The scholarship is awarded to students studying in class 9th to 12th in government, local body, and government-aided schools. The selection of students for the scholarship is based on a national level examination conducted by the respective State/UT governments.
Under the NMMSS, selected students receive a scholarship of Rs. 12,000 per annum. The scholarship amount is disbursed in quarterly installments directly into the bank accounts of the students.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must meet certain criteria, including a minimum score of 55% or equivalent grade in class 8th examination, and a family income not exceeding a specified limit.
The NMMSS is a valuable initiative that promotes equal opportunities in education and helps talented students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds pursue their dreams. It plays a crucial role in reducing the dropout rate and ensuring a brighter future for deserving students.
