Scholarship for Students with Disabilities – Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of India
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, recognizes the pivotal role of education in the socio-economic empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). In line with the Constitution of India and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, the State has a responsibility to ensure the right to education for PwDs.

To fulfill this mandate, the Department is implementing the “Scheme of Scholarships for Students with Disabilities” which consists of six components:

Pre-matric Scholarship (For Classes IX and X)
Post-matric Scholarship (For Class XI to Post-Graduate Degree/Diploma)
Top Class Education (For Graduate and Post-Graduate Degree/Diploma in notified institutes of excellence in education)
National Overseas Scholarship (For Master’s Degree/Ph.D. in Institutions/Colleges/Universities abroad)
National Fellowship (For M. Phil and Ph.D. in Indian Universities)
Free Coaching (For recruitment examinations for Group A, B and C posts and entrance examinations for admission to various technical and professional courses)
The scholarships are open to Indian nationals with benchmark disabilities, defined as a disability of 40% or more, as per the ‘Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016’. Applicants must possess a valid certificate of disability issued by the competent authority as prescribed under the rules.

Under the scheme, no more than two children with disabilities from the same parents can receive benefits. In the case of twins, both are eligible for the scholarship.

It is important to note that the scholarship is available for one year only for each class. If a student needs to repeat a class, they will not receive the scholarship for that class in a subsequent year.
